Lab 4: LU/LC Ground Truthing Analysis

This week we were able to continue off of last modules lab. Last week we worked on LU/LC classification. This week we had to check the accuracy of the lab using ground truthing analysis. After placing 30 points throughout the map, we used google maps to determine whether our initial analysis was true or false. Out of the 30 points, 27 of them were found to be true resulting in 90% accuracy. 

Lab 3: Land Use/Land Cover Classification Mapping

This week we were able to build on our photo interpretation skills by adding LU/LC classifications. I was able to recognize elements of the map and classify them by the LU/LC classification system. The Aerial photo of Pascagoula, MA shows just some of the elements of the area. I was able to recognize certain areas such as water, residential, and recreational land just by associations and certain details. The LU/LC map is split up into many different classifications and is color coded for easy yet simple display. 

GIS 4035 Module 2 Lab: Visual Interpretation

The first lab was a great way to introduce the fundamentals of photo interpretation. We were able to work on a couple of exercises to learn the basics of interpreting features on aerial photographs. The goal of the first exercise was to determine the differences of tones and textures. First we identified  5 tones in the photograph ranging from very light to very dark. Then we were able to identify 5 textures of the photograph ranging from very fine to very coarse. Identifying features was the goal of the second lab. We were able to identify features based on shape and size, shadows, patterns, and associations.

This was an awesome lab to get familiar with photo interpretation. Learning some of these new techniques were really eye opening. I never thought much of using shadows to determine objects in a photo before. I am looking forward to picking up new tricks along the way.

Week 1 - Own Your Map

Hello everyone! Glad to be back for another semester. I completed this lab during the "Intro to GIS" course. I re-posted my previous blog below.

"This weeks lab was a good way to build on what I learned last week. I was able to learn new ways to create a professional looking map. Week 2 has taught me me many skills such as to add inset maps, import cartographer details, and creating layers just to name a few.

I felt that this lab was a great way to improve my GIS skills. In this weeks lab, I was displaying where the UWF campus was located within Escambia County. Local highways and interstates are listed next to UWF.  I was able to add an inset map to show where Escambia County was located within Florda. I also added cartographer details, UWF logo, legend, north arrow, and a scale."
